RICHMOND PLACE

BATH

In 2016 we were introduced to a client with a small, poorly constructed extension on the rear of her listed Georgian artisan’s cottage in the beautiful Richmond area of Bath.

She complained that it was small and damp, and failed to capitalise on their beautiful views. We were commissioned to design for her a new replacement structure there, and she asked us to challenge the orthodoxy of using reconstituted stone and mass produced window units. She asked us to bring sunlight deep into the house, so we set about designing a form that tracked the sun over the course of the day, bringing light deep into the new space with a clerestory window. We also formed a frameless glass corner where the property faced the valley beyond, so there were views unimpeded by cumbersome structural elements. This- alongside a discreet but contextual palette of zinc, glass and local stone- formed a modern addition to a heritage property that contributes an unashamedly contemporary addition to the local environment in a successfully contextual way.
